Herds & Logistics

A herding, pack-animal, inventory, and campaign-movement overhaul for

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord 1.3.15
The Old Realms: War in the Mountains 1.16

Overview

Herds & Logistics expands Bannerlord's existing animal and inventory systems into a more complete campaign-logistics mechanic.

Bannerlord already allows riding horses carried in the party inventory to serve as travel mounts for infantry. This produces the native Footmen on horses movement bonus while those troops remain infantry during battles.

This mod keeps that system intact and adds mechanics for:

- Organized animal handling
- Pack-animal logistics
- Improved inventory capacity
- Cargo distribution
- Reserve riding horses
- Large mixed herds

The goal is to make horses, mules, pack animals, livestock, party skills, and carried cargo interact in a more useful and believable way.

Main Features

Herding Recovery

A properly organized animal train can recover part or all of the normal herding penalty.

The result depends on:

- The number and types of animals carried
- Available handlers
- Party size
- Steward
- Scouting
- Riding
- The proportion of the herd that can be properly managed

Pack animals, livestock, riding horses, and reserve mounts are not treated as equally difficult to manage.

The party-speed tooltip displays the recovery separately:

Herding
Herding recovery
Large unmanaged animal collections still produce significant penalties.

Balanced Loads

Handled pack animals can support part or all of the party's carried cargo.

Balanced Loads reduces the native Cargo within capacity movement penalty according to the percentage of the current load covered by the organized pack train.

Example:

Cargo within capacity -0.05
Balanced loads +0.05
When the tooltip reports 100% covered, the handled pack train supports the full cargo load.

Partially covered loads receive proportional mitigation.

The tooltip also reports the current result:

Balanced loads (100% covered; panniers +876)

Balanced Panniers

Properly handled pack animals provide additional inventory capacity.

The final capacity contribution accounts for active Bannerlord and TOR capacity modifiers, including relevant perks, culture effects, career effects, and other global bonuses.

The added capacity is shown directly in the party-speed explanation:

panniers +876
Only pack animals that the party can properly handle contribute to this bonus.

Adding excessive animals without enough handlers will reduce the effectiveness of the overall train.

Remount Rotation

Riding horses remaining after infantry have received travel mounts can serve as reserve mounts for existing riders.

These remounts allow tired or injured horses to be rotated during long marches.

Remount Rotation:

- Uses only riding horses left after the native Footmen on horses calculation
- Scales with remount coverage
- Scales with Riding skill
- Provides up to approximately 4% additional campaign speed
- Does not convert infantry into battlefield cavalry
- Does not double-count Footmen on horses
- Is disabled while the party is overburdened

The bonus appears as Remount rotation in the party-speed tooltip when its conditions are met.

Native Footmen on Horses Behavior

Bannerlord already assigns spare riding horses to foot troops for campaign travel.

One eligible riding horse can provide one foot soldier with a temporary travel mount.

This produces the native:

Footmen on horses
movement bonus.

The unit remains infantry in combat.

Herds & Logistics preserves this mechanic and uses only additional horses for its remount system.

The Old Realms Compatibility

The mod was built specifically for:

- Bannerlord 1.3.15
- The Old Realms: War in the Mountains 1.16

It derives from TOR's own campaign models:

- TORPartySpeedCalculatingModel
- TORInventoryCapacityModel

This preserves TOR-specific systems such as:

- Career effects
- Blessings
- Item traits
- Weather modifiers
- Culture bonuses
- Campaign perks
- TOR inventory-capacity rules

The mod does not broadly replace TOR's campaign systems.

Requirements

- Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord 1.3.15
- The Old Realms: War in the Mountains 1.16

Harmony is not required.

Installation

1. Extract the archive into the Bannerlord installation directory.

The resulting path should be:

Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\Modules\HerdsAndLogistics\SubModule.xml
2. Open the Bannerlord launcher.

3. Enable Herds & Logistics.

4. Place it after TOR_Core in the load order.

Updating

Delete the previous:

Modules\HerdsAndLogistics
folder before installing a new version.

This prevents obsolete DLL files from remaining in the module directory.

Save Compatibility

The mod can be added to an existing campaign.

It stores no custom campaign or save data.

Removing gameplay-model mods during an active campaign should still be done with a backup save.

Tooltip Information

The party-speed tooltip may display:

- Herding recovery
- Balanced loads
- Pannier capacity
- Cargo coverage percentage
- Remount rotation

Example:

Herding -0.58
Herding recovery +0.58
Cargo within capacity -0.05
Balanced loads (100% covered; panniers +876) +0.05
These entries make the logistics calculations directly visible during play.
