Let the residents of Pelican Town join you during your moments of rest.

<br />NPC Companions is an optional addon for Rest and Recover.
<br />

Overview


<br />
<br />Resting no longer has to be a completely solitary activity.
<br />
<br />While your farmer is sitting and recovering, nearby villagers may notice them, walk over, and begin a short conversation.
<br />
<br />Each supported character has their own dialogue topics, personality, friendship requirements, and possible player responses.
<br />
<br />After the conversation ends, the NPC stays nearby for a moment and then returns to their previous position or normal daily schedule.
<br />
<br />This is not a follower mod.
<br />
<br />NPCs only approach the player during occasional resting moments.
<br />
<br />

How It Works


<br />
<br />When the player begins resting, the addon waits for the configured amount of time.
<br />
<br />It then searches for an eligible villager in the same location.
<br />
<br />The NPC must:
<br />
<br />

    <br />
  • be in the same location as the player;
    <br />
  • meet the minimum friendship requirement;
    <br />
  • not be participating in an event or festival;
    <br />
  • have a safe and reachable path toward the player;
    <br />
  • not already be busy with another activity controlled by the addon.
    <br />

<br />If a suitable NPC is found, they will walk toward the player and stop at a safe distance.
<br />
<br />The conversation then begins using the normal Stardew Valley dialogue interface.
<br />
<br />After the visit, the NPC returns to their previous position or resumes their normal schedule.
<br />
<br />If no safe path is available, the visit is skipped.
<br />
<br />
<br />

Branching Conversations


<br />
<br />Each supported character has three longer conversations.
<br />
<br />The conversations generally unlock at:
<br />
<br />

    <br />
  • 2 hearts – lighter and more casual topics;
    <br />
  • 5 hearts – more personal interests, work, or family;
    <br />
  • 8 hearts – deeper thoughts, worries, and future plans.
    <br />

<br />During a conversation, the player can choose between three different responses.
<br />
<br />Each response leads to a different reaction from the NPC.
<br />
<br />The conversations are designed as small immersive moments connected to resting, rather than a complete replacement for the original dialogue system.

Visit Frequency Modes


<br />
<br />NPC Companions includes several ready-made frequency profiles:
<br />
<br />

    <br />
  • Sporadic – rare visits with a longer delay and a maximum of one visit per day.
    <br />
  • Balanced – recommended for normal gameplay.
    <br />
  • Frequent – NPCs approach more often and after a shorter delay.
    <br />
  • Quick / Testing – almost immediate visits intended mainly for testing.
    <br />
  • Custom – manually configure all visit settings.
    <br />

<br />Frequent and Quick modes may interrupt resting often and can become annoying during normal gameplay.

Configuration


<br />
<br />With Generic Mod Config Menu installed, you can configure:
<br />
<br />

    <br />
  • visit frequency profile;
    <br />
  • required resting time;
    <br />
  • visit chance;
    <br />
  • search radius;
    <br />
  • minimum friendship hearts;
    <br />
  • maximum visits per day;
    <br />
  • time between visit checks;
    <br />
  • how long an NPC remains after a conversation;
    <br />
  • safe approach distance;
    <br />
  • long conversations;
    <br />
  • completed conversation repetition;
    <br />
  • whether the same NPC can visit multiple times per day.
    <br />

Safe Furniture Handling


<br />
<br />NPCs do not walk directly onto the occupied seat.
<br />
<br />The addon creates a protected area around the player and the furniture being used.
<br />
<br />This prevents NPCs from:
<br />
<br />

    <br />
  • walking onto stools;
    <br />
  • entering one-seat benches;
    <br />
  • colliding with the seated farmer;
    <br />
  • forcing the player to stand up;
    <br />
  • blocking the occupied furniture tile.
    <br />

<br />If the NPC cannot find a safe reachable position, the visit will not begin.

Installation

  1. Install SMAPI.
    <br />
  2. Install Rest and Recover 1.4.6 or newer.
    <br />
  3. Download NPC Companions.
    <br />
  4. Extract the downloaded folder into your Stardew Valley Mods directory.
    <br />
  5. Launch the game through SMAPI.
    <br />

Known Limitations


<br />
<br />

    <br />
  • NPCs must normally be present in the same location as the player.
    <br />
  • NPCs currently stand near the resting player instead of sitting on the same furniture.
    <br />
  • Visits are disabled during festivals and active events.
    <br />
  • A visit is skipped if no safe route can be found.
    <br />
  • Special characters such as Sandy, Krobus, and the Dwarf can only visit in locations they normally occupy.
    <br />
  • Custom NPCs do not currently have their own unique long conversations.
    <br />
  • Multiplayer support has not yet been fully tested.
    <br />

Testing Command


<br />
<br />To clear the completed conversation history, enter the following command in the SMAPI console:

<br />rrnpc_reset_conversations

<br />This command is intended mainly for testing and allows completed conversations to appear again.
<br />
<br />
<br />

Uninstallation


<br />
<br />Delete the following folder from your Mods directory:
<br />

<br />RestAndRecover.NPCCompanions

<br />The addon does not permanently modify the original game files.
<br />
